Ever wondered what defines a business opportunity? It can be a great variety of things. One example: vending machines are being touted as some fantastic business opportunity. Well, go out and get rich by setting up gazillions of those!
The all-knowing Wikipedia maintains that if there exists some need for something, and money can be made by fulfilling that need, then there is a business opportunity. Take an example: skin problems — such as acne, which many people have problems with. So what you do is offer these folks some kind of solution to the acne problem — a piece of useful information for example. That’s a business opportunity right there.
Then there is for instance dog-training. There must be millions of people who have dogs, and a certain percentage of those dogs have some kind of behaviour problem. Then you can sell these folks a book on how to train your dog. So — help real people solve their problems, and you can make some cash. This is a classic win-win situation.
Another big niche is the self-help area. People want to improve not only their dogs but also themselves, in various ways. Examples: stop smoking, lose weight, find happiness, discover the meaning of life. Suppose you are able to offer some remedy for such problems — if so you are on a roll.
Look at it this way: rather than offering people problem-solving things; you are giving them dreams. What I mean by that is that oftentimes the important part is not what a product really does, but rather how it makes people feel.
People buy things to feel better. Some products really have no other function. So, why do you think women like to use perfumes? Indeed, what other reason is there to use perfumes etc, except to feel good about yourself.
Those businesses that have a feeling for how to adjust to fundamental human instincts like that, are raking in the dough. Take a simple thing like how a product is packaged. Big businesses are willing to sink plenty of dollars into investigating things like what type of package design seems to sell the best.
Which means: when you compare the merits of business opportunities, then consider if they have the potential to make people feel better. Why not write an ebook where you tell your audience they can lose weight by eating pizzas all day. If you manage to write it so the readers feel good about themselves, you may have a winner.
